Rich Been

Twenty amazing years of traveling the globe and working with thousands of individual leaders and teams taught Rich a lot about what it takes to be a true leader.  Today he applies that learning to helping individual leaders and teams who are genuinely trying to make a positive contribution to society.  The guiding principle to Rich’s work is that leadership is a service provided to those we lead. Toward that end, he uses his expert facilitation skills to help leaders adopt a service mind-set and interact human to human instead of role to role.

My Background

I began my career as a mechanical engineer responsible for optimizing the efficiency of large industrial energy systems.  But after I started leading teams, I became more interested in how to optimize the efficiency of people working together.

In 2005, I joined the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) where, as Senior Faculty, I worked with every level of leader – from CEOs to front-line – and from Fortune 50 global corporations to small non-profits.  This experience combined with CCL’s world-class research-based leadership development methodology, helped me understand what it takes to develop leaders who actually lead versus ones who simply occupy a position of authority.

In 2017, I joined CCL’s Coaching Practice Leadership Team where I co-led the design and delivery of Better Conversations Every Day and Better Conversations & Coaching.  This experience taught me the value of effective conversations and how simple shifts in behavior can have huge impact on people working more effectively together.

Today, Rich works as a designer, coach and team facilitator for The People Side delivering world-class leadership development experiences for leaders and teams.

Rich holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MA in Holistic Health Education.  Additionally, he is a Professional Certified Coach through the International Coaching Federation.

Why I Work

“I work to serve individual leaders and teams who are genuinely trying to make a positive contribution to our society and yet struggle to work together in a way that produces effective and sustainable results.”

When I Am Not Working

I live in San Diego with my husband John and our two dogs.  For fun, I enjoy my daily sunrise run in the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge.

Since 2010, I’ve had the good fortune of coaching the Leadership Team at buildOn, a non-profit organization that builds schools in some of the most underdeveloped countries in the world while also providing service learning opportunities to some of the most underprivileged high school students here in the US.   It’s through my work at buildOn that I have learned the path to a meaningful and fulfilling life is through being of service to others.
